Overview
İzmir is Turkey’s third-largest city, with a population of approximately 3.7 million, and the country’s second-largest port after Istanbul, making it an important transportation and commercial hub. Located on the Central Aegean coast, İzmir is a rapidly growing city set along a wide bay backed by rolling hills halfway down Turkey’s western coastline.
With a history stretching back thousands of years, İzmir—formerly known as the ancient city of Smyrna—has evolved into a modern, vibrant metropolis. Today, it is one of the fastest-growing cruise ship ports in the Aegean and an excellent base for excursions to nearby highlights such as Ephesus and Pergamon.
The city blends contemporary life with historical charm. Broad boulevards, glass-fronted buildings, and modern shopping centers stand alongside traditional red-tiled roofs, an 18th-century bazaar, historic mosques, and churches. Overall, İzmir offers a lively atmosphere that feels closer to Mediterranean Europe than to traditional Anatolian Turkey.

Itinerary
Welcome to Turkey! Upon arrival at İzmir Airport or pickup from your hotel, meet with TravelShop Booking staff and transfer to İzmir city center.
İzmir, Turkey’s third-largest city, was formerly known as Smyrna and has been called the “Pearl of Asia Minor” since ancient times. Blending rich history with modern life, İzmir offers a unique cultural experience.
Your tour begins at Konak Square, home to the iconic Clock Tower. Designed by Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Père and built in 1901, the Clock Tower was constructed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamid II’s accession to the throne. The clock mechanism itself was a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II, and the tower is beautifully decorated in an elegant Ottoman architectural style.
Next, visit the historic Asansör (Elevator) Building, located in a different district of the city. Built to connect two streets at vastly different elevations, the Asansör has long symbolized the harmony and brotherhood of İzmir’s diverse ethnic and religious communities. Enjoy a coffee break here while your guide shares the fascinating history of the area.
Continue to the Ancient Agora, dating back to the Hellenistic period. This was once the administrative and commercial heart of ancient Smyrna, making it an exciting site to explore and imagine daily life in antiquity.
Then, walk through the lively Kemeraltı Bazaar, passing local fish and vegetable markets, to reach Hisarönü Mosque. You will have free time for lunch in Kemeraltı, one of the busiest and most vibrant districts of İzmir. Since the 18th century, Kemeraltı has remained the city’s commercial center and is an excellent place to shop for souvenirs and experience local life.
After the tour, transfer back to İzmir Airport or your hotel.
